Sainfoin
- Onobrychis viciaefolia
Sainfoin is
a medium-lived introduced legume. It is generally
adapted to the same areas as Alfalfa but is not as
productive. Sainfoin however is non-bloating so is
sometimes used as an alternative to Alfalfa for that
reason. As a forage legume Sainfoin is outclassed
by Alfalfa, but for reclamation use the species does
have some advantages being more drought tolerant and
cold tolerant. Sainfoin will be persistent in
dryland applications being quite intolerant of
flooding and water logged soils.
